How can I keep my LPR status (Green Card) while working in Canada?

I just had my green card issued.. however, new things developed and I will have to work in Toronto Canada for the next 4-5 years.. in the meanwhile, how can I maintain my green card?|||Canada would NOT grant you permission to work in Canada, unless you drop your US resident status , first. You can't be BOTH at the same time, it is not allowed.

Jim B. Toronto.|||Number one, you would have to file an income tax return in the U.S. as a resident on your world wide income. Your income in Canada would have to be reported on form 1040, and you would have to file as a resident.

If you don't want to pay income tax on your world wide income, and very few people could blame you if you didn't want to, it would be impossible to keep your card.

In general, the factors that are considered in determining abandonment of resident status are the duration of the alien's absence, the location of the alien's family ties, property holdings, job, and the intention of the alien with respect to both the location of his actual home and the anticipated length of the absence.

An absence of 4 to 5 years rarely would be considered brief or temporary. At the end of the 4 - 5 years, you would have the burden of proving that you are returning to an unrelinquished domicile after a temporary trip abroad.

You'd be better off going for another immigrant visa at the end of your time in Canada. Perhaps you can use the same petitioner.|||you cant - you cannot be outside of USA for more than 2 years in any 5 year period, (and you must ask permission first) otherwise you WILL LOSE the green card status

saying that you want to work out of USA is NOT a good reason to leave USA for 2 years - you should be working inside the USA|||Jim ...that's nonsense
