Someone i know is using a lawyer's office to help with the paperwork and her petition to get legal status...green card. It seems legit but seems to me the lawyer is charging a high price for this service. What benefit is there using a lawyer. Is it just the paper work they perform, to make it easier for you. They cannot put your paper work on top of the pile at the immigration office anyway. Is there any free immigration services in New York City that one can recommend. This is crucial info! If the person is not legally present in the US, it is highly unlikely that any immigration attorney can ever obtain legal status and GC for that person. They will charge very high fees (fees can run $25,000), and they will try this-that-%26amp;-t'other, but there is almost no chance whatsoever that the person can ever be "legalized' no matter what they do. There is no way to legalize an illegal alien, not even marriage or procreation.
If the person is legally present in the US, fees will depend on their current status and grounds for applying for legal permanent residence. E.g. for marriage, legal fees, including all filing fees, typically run about $3000, could run up to about $5000. Remember filing fees alone run well over $1000 if the person entered on fiance visa and is filing to change status from fiance visa to legal permanent resident.
Free immigration services? An immigrant is expected to be able to support themselves and pay their own way. If they want an attorney, they need to pay for the service. But if fees are high, it is probably because their situation is complicated, or else they are illegal and they are going to end up going home.
If this person is not legally present, be sure you do absolutely nothing whatsoever to "help" them as you could be violating various laws prohibiting aiding %26amp; abetting illegal aliens. Do not allow an illegal alien to stay in your home, ride in your car, etc.|||If the person is already here illegally then there isn't anything anyone can do..with a lawyer ot without. If the person is here legally then you are going to need a lawyer.
