Can a "Work Permit" or a "Visa" be changed to "Perminant Residence" or "Green Card" status in the USA?

I was wondering if a USA work permit or Visa can be changed to "Perminant Residence" or "Green Card" status. If so how long does it take? I am not bothered about not being able to vote!

I currently reside in the list of countries that is under the "Visa Waiver Program"

Thank you.|||If you get married to an American, and stay married to the citizen for about 4 years or so (it took quite a long time when we did it), then you can apply for permanent residence.

It is of no use to try to fleece an American into marriage if it's not for real, because the time required for the permanent residence paperwork (years...) is way too long for anyone to pretend to be married. Basically. :It's also illegal. :)

There are other ways to get what you want, but I think it is not as easy, or as sure.
